Cause?

So for ages I've wanted to start a clothing label. I think so many shirts out there are shitty, ugly and poorly designed, and that I could so a better job. and I plan to.

anyway, I recently (yes, late to the party) discovered LOVE146, a charity dedicated to helping victims of child sex slavery. they use a site called SKREENED which lets you upload designs and sell them - much like cafepress or other sites, except that this one is ethical labor, so it's only american apparel clothing, no sweatshops, and they donate 5% of profits every month to charity.

so I'm going to do it - I'm going to start a store and donate the profits. now all I need is a charity.

so what do you think I should donate to?

I mean I obviously thought of donating it to some sort of DSG/GLBT rights group, and also to an eating disorder help group. Can you guys think of anything? Do you know any charities in particular?

if i were doing this, i would be doing twloha.

buuuut, there's an eating disorder group that i know of, only i think they only run in my town...

I don't really like TWLOHA because of their association with MM. whatnow? O_O

I was thinking about doing the exact same thing today in school except for with messenger bags.
Obviously not fancy, just the regular cloth ones.

Mercy Missions, or it's something like that. It's kind of similar to TWLOHA, but I don't really agree with it's methods. whatnow? O_O

I was thinking that maybe I'll donate it to a group that supports victims of GLBT-phobic violence. Or, maybe a program that offers free legal advice and help? I've seen horrible things happen to many of my friends - one friend, Paul, has been gay bashed over ten times, and has spent thousands of dollars in legal fees putting the people who did it behind bars. while I support him and how hard he's fighting, not everyone has that sort or money or support from their family.

and yes - TWLOHA supports a variety of groups, one of which is Mercy Ministries. it's a religious group that claims to be a last-chance for mentally ill girls. they "take in" girls who are suffering from depression, bipolar, eating disorders - serious psychological and psychiatric conditions - and cut off all ccontact from their families and friends. they take all the money they have and ration them tiny amounts per week for the necessities, and if the girls ask for more they're told its greedy. they're not allowed to make friends or they're accused of lesbianism. they're not allowed to talk about their problems, or they're told they dont love God enough. these people take these girls faith, one of the last things they have to cling to, and abuse it for the sake of money and brainwashing. it is absolutely disgusting and makes me sick to my stomach.

Check Charity Navigator. You can find what kinds of organizations and which ones are the best to donate to. you have pleased him
