Choke.
"Victor Mancini, a medical-school dropout, is an antihero for our deranged times. Needing to pay elder care for his mother, Victor has devised an ingenious scam: he pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants. He then allows himself to be "saved" by fellow patrons who, feeling responsible for Victor's life, go on to send checks to support him. When he's not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual addiction recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park. His creator, Chuck Palahniuk, is the visionary we need and the satirist we deserve."
I finished this book Sunday afternoon and it is, hands down, my favorite book this year. Thoughts? Opinions? (original thread got deleted)

Re: Choke.
When was Choke released?
Because I've seen this movie, Filantromica, it's Romanian and by far one of the best movies I've ever seen, whose plot resembles that of Choke.
I haven't read Choke, I've seen it around but I've read Fight Club and wasn't really impressed, but in the movie I was talking about the main character - a middle aged struggling writer who is also a literature teacher- gets involved in a scheme similar to the one in the book. He and an other woman -it's complicated to explain who he gets to meet her >_> - dine in restaurants and pretend to be a married couple celebrating their 10 years anniversary. But when they have to pay they get scared and pretend they don't have enough money to pay for it. -The story works in the context of the 90's economic crisis.- Well the woman cries and he offers to work in the restaurant, they make sure the everyone in the room hears them and in the end, everyone pays for their dinner.
But they previously make an agreement with the waiter so that he doesn't serve them anything, only pretend to and then share the money.
I'm horrible at explaining movie or book plots but the movie was brilliant, maybe you'd want to watch it since it's really similar to Choke.
I've talked around the subject enough now.

Re: Choke.
I was just asking because I thought that maybe the movie copied some of the book but the movie's from the 90s.
Maybe I'll watch the film version of the book.

Re: Choke.
I'm going to see the movie tomorrow.
This book was odd, but I really liked it.
At times it was kind of like, "WHOA!"
I felt kind of strange after I read it though. I can't place it.

Re: Choke.
Tell me if it's good! I'm planning on seeing it as well.
I agree with you, some moments were pretty shocking, but I really liked this book.

Re: Choke.
The book was sick in the best way possible.
Just, how?
But I really want to watch the movie.
I love Victor.
And I love his mom.

Re: Choke.
I went and saw the movie yesterday.
We almost didn't get in because the old guy taking tickets was checking ID. I'm not eighteen, and we needed an adult with us. So my friend's aunt, who dropped us off, had to come with us. BUT THEN THEY ID'd HER TOO!
Anyway, it was a good movie. A little "WHOA" like the book, in some parts.
I think I have to read the book again though, because I didn't remember some of the important things.

Re: Choke.
I thought the movie was okay, but the book was 92747x better.
But that's usually how things are.
But anyway, I think Chuck is a genius.
Choke is probably by 2nd or 3rd favorite by him.

Re: Choke.
I read the book this summer, so I can't remember it in exact detail.
That said, I'm pretty sure the book and movie were quite similiar. There really wasn't a huge difference, but the book included more, obviously. There was more about the rocks in the book.
Tbh, I had forgot about some things in the book until it happened in the movie.

^ Ditto.
There wasn't that much of a difference, everything was basically the same.
I just thought that the book was better.
