Goodbye.
In every hello, there is a goodbye, and in every beginning there must lie an ending. That is how the beginning of a journey brings us here, mourning the goodbye that it entails.
Goodbye, innocence. You were a good companion; we may not have always recognized you, but you were there, softening our gestures and our words with your enveloping vapor.
Goodbye, simplicity. Your face was always veiled to us, but you were present nonetheless. You've rubbed off on us the habits of old, and we carry them with us as a reminder. A reminder to when you raised us, cradling us in your arms. But you fell away, and we weep at our loss.
Goodbye, honesty. We've seen your face so little that it seems almost natural for you to be gone, but in the same breath we confess that there is a hole left by you. You shall not be forgotten, though your effects may die out quickly.
Goodbye, closeness. We grow distant without your constant reassuring touch, and it will make this only harder. Try as we might, every strand of your being is wrenched from us. For this we mourn the loss not only of you, but of each other.
Goodbye, security. You dwelt with us til now, but the parting has left us bitter. We try but cannot remember the feeling of your arms around us; we manage with the knowledge that you once were with us, though we know not how it felt.
Within every goodbye, there is a hello, no matter how small or how bittersweet. The silver lining is thin, but more than a fable. In these goodbyes we see the hello, the big picture that we've missed. What we must keep in mind is that hello, that beginning.
Goodbye, innocence. Goodbye, simplicity. Goodbye, honesty. Goodbye, closeness. Goodbye, security.
