Ugh. So any of you who've ever been unfortunate enough to be on the end of one of my rants will know how much I hate the TV show Big Brother.

Partially because it's reality TV and I think reality TV is the biggest and stupidest oxymoron to grace the face of the earth today (yes I do realise 'television' doesn't translate to 'fiction', but imo if you want reality go the fuck outside).

But, mostly, because if Orwell turned in his grave every time someone defaced his work, then this show is going to be giving him the worst sleep in eternity.

Google big brother. Go on, do it now. Now, how many of those pictures relate to 1984? Aaaand how many relate to that motherfucking show?

What really drives me insane about Big Brother is it made... well, Big Brother (the original one) into a joke. he wasn't a joke. He was a tool of mass control. He wasn't some fuddy duddy pervert who existed behind a screen and gave orders, damnit - he wasn't even a HE. He wasn't even REAL. He was an idea. An idea that was used to control an entire society.

Anyone else know of any tools used to control society? What's the first one that comes to mind? Seriously - I want to know. Because I know the first thing I thought of was 'mass media'.

It's kind of funny that they're making a subconscious statement on control, really. In an ironic way.

Ugh I don't even know where I'm going with this. I'm just annoyed that Orwell's genius, and a book that should be being resurrected right now, in this age of surveilance and control and complete voyeurism, is instead being watered down and told to the public in a bid for money.

I'd say by 2084 Orwell's predictions will have come more or less true. Okay, so he's 100 years too early, but still - scary thought.

AND A SEAMLESS SEGUE (and by seamless I mean nonexistent) INTO CENSORSHIP. YAAAAY!

You all know the ridiculous obsession I have with dystopias, yes? Is it a bad thing that I'm kind of excited about this internet censorship bullshit going on in Australia right now? I mean, sure, it's going to be terrible for a while, if it passes (99% sure it won't anyway) but, think. You can't have a revolution without the need for something to be overthrown, can you?

So, for those who don't know:

The ACMA's blacklist (websites that will be censored in Australia, should the motion pass) was recently leaked. The government have been pretty hardcore about trying to keep it under wraps, and have been threatening fines and up to ten years jail time for websites containing it - unfortunately for them, the majority of the leaking has been done anonymously through untraceable servers. If you were interested in checking it out, it can be found here. Hope I don't get fined $11,000 for linking it.

Oh, and I must warn you - it is just a list, but many of the URLs link to content that, even without censorship laws, is illegal or otherwise offensive, so don't read it if you're easily offended, young, or have expecially nosy parents who might enquire as to its contents. Most of it just porn and internet poker. However, for those chantards of us, our beloved /b/ (the random board on 4chan; not linked because of the content it often contains) along with sever other chans (7chan, 34chan and 55chan, from what I can see) are banned. There's also imgsrc (from <img src="http://urlhere.com">, the html tag) which is an image sharing site known for its amazing high res photos.

I think pretty much any site with no content filter of its own is blocked. So, if there's a chance that someone COULD upload something illegal (or something legal but not likeable, like even artistic nude photos) it's banned. Which is kind of ridiculous because it's not as if these sites condone illegal content. They simply offer a hosting service for users to exploit as they please.

I've been reading through the list of sites (some of this stuff is so gross, seriously. I'm not going to any URLs unless they look completely innocent and even then I'm using a proxy) and interestingly enough, I've found a couple of IP addresses. One of them was an internet sattelite, and the other was located in Israel. -shrug- don't know what to make of that.

I've been reading about it and I see no reason anyone would vote this in. I mean, the vast majority of us aren't too fussed with what other people are doing with their spare time. I for one have no issue with people looking at porn if they want. Jerk off all you like; it's affecting your social life, not mine. And illegal material, such as snuff or explicit content featuring animals, persons under 18, relatives, etc, is already illegal. No matter where such content is made (because in some countries it is perfectly legal) it's subject to local viewing laws. So even though it's able to be viewed, it's still illegal.

I mean, shouldn't they - instead of blocking or filtering such content - think to monitor the viewing more? A lot of arrests are made based on IP stalking of people regularly viewing such sites. If it's impossible to view them, these nasty pasties aren't going to be caught nearly as quickly.

Sounds pretty stupid, to me. -shrug-

I know that; there's no reason for it to be.

And, it's not all porn. You have to sift through a bit but there's some crazy stuff. I found a site called 'The Church of Euthanasia'. It encourages mass suicide/sterilization in an attempt to stunt the population growth. Environmentally I agree but socially I'm obviously opposed to such ideas. I mean, shit man, I don't want to die; why would millions of other people?

Besides, the human race will destroy itself anyway -shrug-

Jesus christ. That's a lot of websites, and just by reading them, they look like mostly porn.
But I do agree with you Mikey, it's really none of their business what people do with their lives. If people want to look at porn, they should be able to.

(I personally think it's gross. But ya know.)

Yeah, so I really don't think they should be doing that.
AND WTF
WHY DID I NOW KNOW AB OUT THIS BEFORE?
Thanks so much, American freaking media.

It's all been kept very under wraps, even in Aus. Nobody really knew that much about it until the leak.

And, yeah, it is mostly porn. Mostly stuff either done with underaged people or depicting overaged people as underaged, as far as the URLs say.

I checked out a bunch of the sites that didn't look like they'd be porn but none of the URLs even worked DDDDDD:

Maybe it's already in place? I mean if I was a government censor I'd do it by acting as if the page had been deleted/a link broken, rather than having a message telling the viewer it had been censored.

And yeah, I don't like porn -shrug- I mean, if it's what someone likes then cool by them, but I just don't. It's so *fake*. I don't see how people can get turned on by watching it.

It's actually kind of funny tbh lol@chu I saw one once on my cousin's cable TV (her step brother used to fall asleep watching it LOL@CHUUU wtf) and like, it had the STUPIDEST PLOT EVER LOL@CHUUU I can't even remember much, just that it was like a bad soap.

But my main issue with it is the fact that it's the INTERNET and it's pretty much the only form of uncensored media we have left. Besides, really, how likely is it that kids will accidentally stumble upon hardcore pornography?

My little sister got curious once, and all she could think to google was things like bum and willy. That's not going to get you very far, and I'd say most kids wouldn't think to turn safesearch off or take any other measures to get more results.

I mean, even if kids who are 13 or whatever are looking at it - if they've consciously gone looking for stuff to jack off to then fucking let them. At least if they're at home flying ~solo it means they're not out having sex for real. If it's going to keep there from being any more chances of 13 year old fathers then more power to them >_<

And I mean, obviously child pornography, incest sites, etc, should be filtered, but really - those are illegal ANYWAY, filtering won't do much.

It just seems so stupid and such a waste of time to me.

I was on something like 'The Church of Euthanasia' some months ago, officially it counts as assisted suicide [which is illegal in most countries], there was a big fuss about sites of that sort two or three years ago and a lot of them were shut and they don't appear on popular search sites [like google or msn] anymore. Though you can, if you have a bit of patience find them, so I understand why they'd make something like that illegal, I'd also understand banning proana sites, those are bigger issues than internet porn. Two weeks ago a french blog Femme Femme Femme was flagged as inappropriate by Google. o_O The site deals with how women are seen in art. It's absolutely ridiculous because the site is amazing.

Is it still legally assisted suicide if it's just attempting to convince people to kill themselves? I mean it's... creepy, sure, and it was treated kind of like a religion, but it stated that they dealt with personal endeavors to convert others to the church and then kill themselves, rather than actually killing/assisting etc.

Personally I don't disapprove of euthanasia as long as there's psychologists advising and contractual agreements. As someone who had to watch two of their loved ones waste away, experiencing constant physical and emotional agony (I can't imagine what it would have been like for people as intelligent as my grandfathers to know that their intelligence was declining at an exponential rate) I can understand exactly why you'd want it. Not only would they have experienced less pain, but so would all of us. If I was in their position (and as Parkinson's skips a generation and is more present in males, I may well be) I'd want to end it quickly and with some dignity.

I took a look at that. I guess because of the nudity? It's the same with that imgsrc.ru site - all the nudes are artistic, but for some reason the content is still treated as 'questionable'. It's ridiculous. I mean, no wonder children are experimenting sexually so young these days, looking at porn, etc - with the way nudity is treated these days, it's the only education they're getting. And besides, it's human nature to be curious about the taboo. Who EVER hears someone say 'Don't look that way!' and doesn't look to see what's so horrible? We're curious almost to the point of masochism, and the more we're deprived of things in one form, the more we're going to look for them in another.

The human body is not a tool for sex, it's a tool for life. My parents took me to art galleries when I was young; I've seen naked paintings, I've seen naked photos, I've seen naked people. And as a result I've grown up to be someone who respects the human form and understands that it can be beautiful in a completely non-sexual manner. One of the only friends I have who wasn't exposed to things like artistic nudity has grown up with sex and all things sexual being a completely taboo subject, and as a result lost her virginity very young and has turned out to be what I could politely call somewhat promiscuous and impolitely call... well, a lot of things I won't say.

Even sex in itself shouldn't be considered something dirty or wrong. Yes, it can be done for fun between two strangers, but it can also be a means of furthering a connection between two people who love each other. And I think if it's treated as such - something to be shared by mature, committed adults - rather than something that's naughty and forbidden, then this whole teen sex thing would probably be much less prominent.

I just... don't understand the world. -headshake-
