The fog hung low in the air, it wrapped around the two women, making the atmosphere seem more peaceful, in a way. The rain was only beginning and was drizzling on their hooded heads as they walked down the beach shoreline. There was a hurricane coming in.

The waves were reasonably bigger than they usually were, and crashed into the shore with a deafening roar. It was essentially the beginning of the chaotic day or two that was ahead of them. The shorter of the two women leaned against a rock listening to the vociferous call of the waves, with her eyes closed, inhaling the relaxing smell of sea salt. The other woman, with camera in hand, snuck a picture of her.

“Melinda,” she whined, opening her eyes.

Melinda stuck her tongue out and smiled. She put her arm around Elizabeth’s neck.

“I never get any pictures of you,” she retorted.

“That’s the whole point.”

They sat in silence for a moment, letting the sound of the waves crash over them. The rain has begun to soak through their thin sweatshirts and the wind was picking up. It could be heard whistling through the cracks of the old lighthouse near them. But they did not move. Elizabeth rested her head on Melinda’s shoulder and snuggled into it. Melinda smiled and played with a lock of her hair. They watched the grey scene around them at ease, both thinking about how beautiful the day was, though most would consider it dank, dark, and dreary.

“Come on,” Melinda giggled, taking Elizabeth’s hand.

“Where are we going?” she called to the girl leading them, amusement apparent in her voice.

“Just down to the rocks for a bit. And then we’ll leave it’s getting bad now.”

“Okay,” Elizabeth agreed.

They watched for a few minutes as the waves collide against the rocks and fly up into the air, foamy water misting them occasionally. The water pooled around their feet, reflecting the image of their hands locked together across the surface of the puddle. Each of them saw it at the same time and smiled.

The cold was starting to seep into their bones and they heard the thunder in the distance. The wind blew fiercely and the rain was starting to come down hard.

“Think it’s time to go?” Melinda asked.

Elizabeth looked into her almond colored eyes and frowned a bit.

“Yeah, but it’s so pretty. . .”

They both rushed into the car, thoroughly soaked and freezing. Elizabeth started the vehicle with trembling hands and Melinda blasted the heat at the highest level.

“Don’t worry, we’ll come back again,” she comforted.

“Yeah,” she paused, “But it won’t be like this. This is just kind of. . .perfect.”

Melinda smiled, “No, you’re perfect.”

Elizabeth looked at her for a moment in awe, took in her brunette curls, her stunning smile, her big brown eyes, her everything. She shook her head and pressed her lips to Melinda’s in a sweet, soft kiss that left them both breathless.

“No, you are,” she whispered, catching her breath.

They both stared and smiled. Melinda pushed a lock of hair from Elizabeth’s face.

“Let’s go get a cup of hot chocolate,” she beamed.

Elizabeth nodded, snuck a kiss on the cheek, and put the car in reverse.
