Bell-like laughter flitted suddenly through the air, clear and light, almost as sly as its owner - a young fairy with blue eyes and a taste for mischief. She hopped across the petals of flowers, over the rough bark of elderly trees, the cunning giggle present all the time. Her tiny feet skipped and stumbled over pine needles and young birch leaves. She twirled and danced, her unruly black ringlets bouncing happily over her freckles.

Seated on the floor of the forest, wearing deep green rags so as not to be seen, another fairy watched mournfully. His dark eyes followed each of the girl's leaps and bounds. She moved away from where he sat, then turned and flounced back, graceful hands thrown out to either side like a tightrope walker's. She balanced on one foot atop a pink rose, and suddenly her eyes widened as they landed upon the boy.

The girl straightened up, tilting her head towards her watcher, and waved. He scrambled to his feet, but didn't walk forward. The female sprite leapt down onto the peat and advanced towards him, a playful smile ever-present upon her lips. He continued to stare, frozen to the spot.

Suddenly, she darted forward, poked him in the chest, then flickered away, leaving a sparkle of giggles in her wake. After a moment of confused pondering (he was not, after all, the most brilliant of faeries), he turned and chased after her, bare feet barely touching any surface.

The sky-eyed fairy glanced back, skipping slow enough that the boy almost reached her, but as he stretched out his hand to grab hers, she sped and slipped away. He groaned, but his wings flicked him into faster movement, his eyes ever trained upon the girl's pale yellow wings.

He barely noticed that she had stopped and turned to look at him, a mischievous smile playing on her mouth. He came nearer - and nearer and nearer - and then she leapt away again, peals of laughter echoing through the trees. He very nearly missed tripping on a lump in his indignity and glared forward towards his target.

His burnished-gold hair danced on his forehead as he used both wings and feet to propel himself toward her. Determined, he almost managed to grab her arm, but narrowly missed. He leaped, and his hand finally closed over her fingers. A cry of triumph rang out.
