I love working at a magazine Empty I love working at a magazine

Post by LADIES AND GENTLEMEN Wed 23 Sep 2009, 10:03 pm

So for those of you who don't know, I work at Out in Perth magazine. We're WA's only gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersex, queer and questioning magazine (:

My official title is "advertising assistant" - so whilst I (unfortunately) don't write articles yet, I help people sell advertising, enter data, and make coffee. at the moment, we're leading up to our pride issues - so less advertising (it ind of sells itself for this month) and more helping the journalists. which meeeaaaans, I've been doing a LOT of transcribing of interviews. there's one with a local musicians The Voltaire Twins, one with Anthony Capon (the winner of Project Runway Australia) Courtney Act and, the one I spent at least ten whole minutes squealing over, CHRIS COLFER FROM GLEE WHO I HAPPEN TO BE IN LOVE WITH.

Listening to this boy talk for ten minutes is about 6594302 different types of entertaining. he's extremely cute and funny and he's even girlier than me, which is always nice.

but it's good to be doing the transcribing because it means I get to hear parts of the interviews that I wouldn't read in the paper. and also chris's laugh is adorable (': I dont think I can put the mp3 up anywhere because it'd probably get me fired, but I'll link to the interview when it gets put up. the kid is a sweetheart (: and maybe if the paper keeps growing at the rate it is, I'll get to help with more articles (I'm already doing one this month on the freedom center, and I did a review last month of Short Stack's debut album). ALSO, fairday is coming up this sunday - fairday being the HUGE all-day fair in perth city to kick off the perth gay pride month. its fucking enourmous and gets easily over 10000 visitors every year, and it has all kinds of fun things like free music, stalls (there's a freedom centre one! and out in perth, which I'll be working at too, obviously) a dog show, free stuff, food, rides, clowns and performers, and enourmous amounts of gay merchandise, obviously.

so my life right now is pretty exciting. I have to say, I'm glad work is going well, because other aspects are kind of relentlessly shitty. love life, social life, mental health and something huge that I'd been staking everything on are all at the closest to rock bottom they've been for a long time. so I'm really thankful for such an amazing job with such amazing people.

not only this, but I'm glad to be becoming more involed with the freedom centre and the perth gay scene. obviously I'm not old enough to go out partying, but I'm in a talent show on october 7th (I'll make sure to tape it!) where I'm singing and playing guitar with nitro casino, starring in my friend ozzie's fashion show, playing Lying Is The Most Fun on the piano and singing, and having a bunch of my photography exhibited.

also, my friend paul, who was there with me last friday night when we got harrassed by a group of crazy christians, is starting his own rights movement. it came to a head when a guy PULLED UP BESIDE HIM IN A CAR when paul was walking down the street, and started telling he was a sinner and that he had to repent. paul had been having a bad day, burst into tears and ended up in a screaming match with this guy, which is where his mother found him. so, she and him are designing a bunch of pamphlets disproving the christian theory on why homosexuals are evil and wrong and deserve to burn in hell, and they're going to hand them out beside the preachers in the street.

not only this, but he's going to a current affairs show, to ABC radio (he works at a local radio station) and to HACK which is a program on the popular radio station Triple J. he's being REALLY serious about this, and I support him entirely - while I respect people's right to their own religion, that's not what this is. they are coming up to us in the street and REFUSING to leave, calling us evil, saying we're sinners and condemning us to hell. it's harassment and it's ILLEGAL and we're fighting the fuck back. one of Paul's friends KILLED himself over the harassment he recieved from the church in regards to his sexuality. believing in god? fine. forcing your beliefs on innocent people walking through the street, yelling at them until they cry (not only paul; one of my best friends had it happen to her, by the same lady that called me "michaela" when I said my name was michael) and refusing to leave them alone when they politely request you to is WAY too far. freedom of religion INCLUDES the freedom NOT TO HAVE a religion, and discrimination based on religion INCLUDES atheism.

so long story short, a lot is happening. I'm playing a lot of music and keeping very busy to try and distract myself from all the bullshit happening in my life otherwise.

oh and I put spiderman contact on my electric guitar:

It is exactly. these people have crossed the line, and they've been getting away with this sort of abuse for too long. I'm glad someone finally took a stand (: and I'mma be there beating away anyone who tries to stop him.

Aha, gracias (':

hopefully some of those shots will be used, too! it'd pm make my life if they were, I haven't had any of my photography published before.

and I agree entirely; its good that he's fighting back rather than just taking it.

Aaah, I went to a massive gay rights protest in the city at the start of August and there was this guy on the side of the road, an older man, just saying "repent, repent" at the whole march. (There was seriously like 4000 people there and he was just standing there telling everyone who went past to repent.)

He's entitled to his opinion and everything but everyone just laughed at him, and it was... kinda cool tbh, because everyone was so proud and happy and this guy - who thought it was wrong - was basically just ignored.

:s [/boringstory lol@chu]
It'd be awesome if you could scan in one of your friend Paul's pamphlets.

I shall (: or just give you the digital version, before printing.

and yeah, I agree that they're entitled to their own opinion - but they should keep it to themselves. I don't walk up to random people on the streets and say HEY! GIVE ATHEISM A TRY! IF NOT YOU'LL BE DAMNED TO HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY! OH AND ALSO, YOU'RE A TERRIBLE PERSON FOR LOVING WHO YOU DO!

I just think it's ridiculous |:

but yay for the protest! what was it called?

And oh, relating to working at Out in Perth - you can see my fair day photos on the website in the photos section. anything beginning with IMG_ as opposed to DSC_ was taken by me (:

the interview with chris should be up there, too. and today, I did my first real photojournalism work! I went out and took photos of a "paint in protest", which was pretty much a bunch of street artists doing art outside parliament house (on canvas of course) in protest of the new laws bring brought in banning sale of any "graffiti impliments" (AKA spray paint, markers, and even CRAYONS) to anyone under 18.

so hooray! photos going to be published in the paper!
