“I’ll wait for you at the end of the path in the clearing…”

He told me that while he lay dying. Stabbed in a mugging when we were in our late teens. He was my everything, my life, my only true love.

And now I’m following him, I’m going to meet him. I’m treading up the path now. Though I’m a lot different to what he’ll remember. I’m old, my beauty long gone. I’m still me, I feel guilty. I didn’t stay his forever. I married, had a child. It didn’t last. My husband hated how I still loved my long dead boyfriend. We got divorced two years into it. The child went with him.

I lived alone. Barely visiting my daughter. Rarely seeing my friends. But none of that matters now.

The path is dark; I can see the light at the end of the dark, twisted forest. The clearing up ahead. I know it is. I squint, there’s a figure up ahead, a silhouette against the light.

My heart races, if it weren’t for my bad hip I’d run to him, like I would’ve if I were young. I wonder if he knows it’s me. I approach, slowly. My slippered feet shuffling across the uneven forest floor.

My face breaks into a wrinkled smile when I reach him. He’s smiling at me. His arms outstretched. I stop before I reach them. My old, withered eyes filling with tears.

“You look beautiful.” He said, smiling, his tears were already falling.

“Liar.” I say simply. “I’m old and I’m ugly.”

He shakes his head and takes my small wrinkled hand in his smooth and forever youthful one.

“No matter what.” He says honestly. “You’ll always be beautiful to me.”
