Political Correctness - A step too far? Empty Political Correctness - A step too far?

Post by LightningRod Sat 09 May 2009, 7:52 am

whatnow? O_O

Please don't slander me. Please don't hate me for this.

I just feel that the whole idea of politicial correctness and what is was originally for ( a euphemism for minorities and a way of avoiding discomfort towards certain cultures / races / sexualities etc. ) has been warped.

Now people just say it about anything, something isn't deemed as PC because it gives them a spotlight from the media and to be frank I think it's stupid. One example in the UK was when a word in a song was changed / censored because it was discrimantory towards homosexuals, despite it being in the song for many a year and through the times when PC was sweeping through things.

Feel free to disagree or agree, just don't be hatin' ;D

Peace Out.

Aeriin.

I think Political Correctoraryness has gotten out of hand, but I don't really care because I enjoy being politically incorrect anyway. Screw those bastards that tell us what to say and what not to say.

Was it fag? I say fag. I describe myself as a fag.

People are idiots. It's words. Words aren't physical force. Words have no power without you. You're the one giving it to them, and you can take it away.

Mikey, you have to realize that people aren't as smart as us. They'll do anything to please the government. Rolling Eyes

i r pleased.
I'm really surprised. I was expecting loads of people to be like "COLON HORROR! THAT'S WRONG WHAT YOU'RE SAYING"

-shrugs- But yeah, couldn't agree any more Mikey. And it was the word faggot I think, it was referring to the faggots you eat as opposed to the colloquial term for a homosexual.

Makes me sick tbqh.

Political Correctness - A step too far? Empty Re: Political Correctness - A step too far?

I think that being rude isn't cool, just pointless.
It's like- why would you want to hurt the feelings of someone who's done absolutely nothing to you?
But I'm never good with this sort of things.
Calling yourself something is one thing -because you /know/ you're joking, but if someone else calls you it's different. I'd be somewhat upset if someone made not-so-politically correct remarks regarding my nationality or my sexual orientation and I'd never do it to someone else. It just seems pointless to me.

Political Correctness - A step too far? Empty Re: Political Correctness - A step too far?

Post by LADIES AND GENTLEMEN Sun 10 May 2009, 12:06 am

I use it as a joke. Like, if I'm trying to get a friend's attention I'll yell something like 'HEY FAGGOT', but that's because... well, my friends are all faggots, so they don't mind.

I guess it's like nigger vs. nigga and who is allowed to say it.

I don't know, obviously everyone has their own opinions, but rude in my mind isn't vulgarity so much as being inconsiderate. For example, I wouldn't sit on public transport near a bunch of kids and swear my face off, because it's all about taking into account the situation. But with a group of teenagers I'd probably speak completely freely because it's a fair assumption that a) they won't have a problem with it and b) that if they do have a problem with it they'll speak up about it. Rude is not understanding (or even more, not caring about) the concept of discretion.

I mean, obviously it's all to do with the connotations the terms carry, as discussed. I see nothing rude about 'offensive' terms if they're used in a joking or sarcastic manner.

But obviously I do agree that being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole is just kind of pathetic. As I said - for me, I don't think I should have to limit my language too much because it's a word. It's a formation of the mouth and vibration of the vocal chords - it's not something that should be able to hurt you. Not something small like faggot or fuck, anyway.

In face, I know I'm much more offended when someone says something like 'You're a horrible person' than when they say 'Shut the fuck up you douchebag' because there's obvious intent. It's not a mistake or a slip-up; they're not using slang or shock value to get at you so much as the truth (or their opinion, but those can still hurt).

Kafka I see what you mean, but when it gets to the point I've seen it go to now, it gets stupid. The whole freedom of speech concept to me seems dead.

Honestly, I don't think it should be used at all. >.< That may just be me (being half African American and whatnot) but it was used as a derogatory term back pre-1860's to refer to black slaves.

And I understand that being politically incorrect may be fun, but really. It's so stupid.

Things like the "n word" and calling something gay, instead of dumb shouldn't be done at all.
It isn't about being politically correct.

It's wrong and offensive and just plain mean.

Oh no, I agree - I don't like it at all; I was just making a comparison.

And well yes, I do agree that gay shouldn't have negative connotations, but censoring the word faggot in a song is a bit extreme if they weren't even using it in that context.

I think people can tell if you're just joking around or if you use a word as a pejorative. I -obviously- have nothing against the first situation.

Censorship is a problem on its own.
