Spanish food.
for realz.
sooo. little do many people know, but spanish food is not mexican food. there is quite a huge difference, actually. spaniards really don't like spicy foods, so next time you meet one and want to take them to mexican 'to make them feel at home'...don't.
the spanish make supreme foods, for instance tortilla de patatas [recipe here] which is a potato and egg and onion dish that is really amazing. they also make paella [though that recipe is not quite traditional] which is a saffron + rice + seafood dish. there is a kind of sausage available anywhere in spain called chorizo which is about as spicy as they get [it's not very] but is sososo good fresh.
in the basque country a lot of people own farms. they make their own chorizo sausages using their own freshly-slaughtered pigs. they make popcorn shrimp like you've never had it before. they grill fresh-dead lamb in their outdoor stone pits. they catch frogs out back and make frog legs [not my preference, but apparently they're really good]. they sit in their little freezing cellar rooms and feed the unsuspecting bowls of sheep's milk yogurt. which is completely gross but it's the thought that counts.
the spains make also the best olive oil. they make wine [i hear rioja is the best region to get it from, but you can get local wines anywhere and they're good]. they have this brand of powdered chocolate [for things like hot chocolate] called colacao which, when drank with cookies, makes you melt in a puddle of yum.
some of the best cooks i've ever met are spanish.
anyway, i recommend everyone go to spain nao and find their own sweet basque couple. the experience is truly liberating and they feed you good.
