There have been reports of 2 cases in Britain [in Scotland] after they returned from their honeymoon in Mexico.

Well I think [dangerous territory here] that there won't be any deaths in the US, or a select few near the south bordering Mexico. It's the same sort of situation as the Avian flu by the looks of things, which wasn't that predicted to sweep the world by large?

-crosses fingers- It should be okay.

as far as i know, there's already been a death in la.

i mean, all the cases in north america are ones where the people have been to mexico or have been in contact with someone who has.

there are currently 13 cases in canada - four in ontario, four in nova scotia, two in alberta, and three in british columbia.

the 28 in new york are because a kid went to mexico on spring break and came home and gave it to his classmates.

like...it's going to happen. people aren't that careful. especially kids. they're not going to obsessively wash their hands and that...they just don't think of it.

it's going to spread. it's got to. i can't imagine how you can contain something like this when it's already here.

i mean, if there were NO cases in north america, they could at least you know, keep people from mexico or who are in mexico away. but they can't anymore. it's just not possible at this point.

hmmmm
You raise a fair point and I'm sorry for my ignorance, my information appears to be already outdated.

thank you Carmen.

Alas, if this is the case then the only thing that could be done is to try and prevent further spraeding I guess :/

Carmen, as far as I know there hasn't been a death in the US. They think that the two deaths in California are linked to it, but they aren't sure.

Thing about bird flu was that there was that it never seemed to develop into a strain which allowed human-human transmission-as far as I can remember you only had a risk of bird flu if you spent a whooooole lotta time with diseased birds.
So it had all the "we're all gonna diiiiiiiiiiiie" media hype before it actually developed into a pandemic-level of virus.

Swine flu is apparently transmitted by human-human means, so it has a greater chance of becoming a pandemic right now.

Newspeople here are saying it's too far gone to be contained and best hope is the constant spreading weakens the virus enough for it not to transmit globally/become total evil pandemic of death.

the swine flu scares me. xD
i'm just paranoid like that, though.
just this morning, at approximately 7:30 AM, the news had said the swine flu wasn't very close to chicago.
now the swine flu has been reported in indiana, which is super close to illinois.
i'm just amazed at how fast it's going.

To be honest I'm not afraid.

The main issue is that it's a news disease that we haven't created a cure for yet. Remember SARS? The dreaded SARS virus that devastated the planet and killed like 6 people or something. It's just that it's something new and the media blows things like diseases and recessions up because mass media is a tool of control.

Also I might not be scared because it's not in Perth yet, so it probably wont come here.

Also I'd say most of the deaths so far would have been infants or children, yes?

mikey's post made me feel somewhat better.
the media tends to blow things out of proportion.
and i suppose my immune system is stronger than that of a child.
you're lucky you don't have to worry since it's not in perth yet xD

just figured i'd post this here. gathered a few things. just to be safe. you have pleased him taken from a few sites. tips to prevent catching it and stuff.

1. Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 15 to 20 seconds.
2. Health experts also recommend using hand sanitizer that has least 60-percent alcohol.

Sanitize things you touch frequently such as doorknobs and light switches, garage door openers, telephones, keyboards, etc. <- that's us, guys. XDD

Keep your hands away from your face, particularly away from your mouth and nose. These are quick ways for any germs on your hands to enter your body.

those are the main things pretty much everywhere (:

The media do tend to hype up everything to stupid degrees. Like when they said the 'millenium bug' was going to break all the computers and then nothing happened at all. [/weird aside]

Though if I was listening to a biology teacher talking about it this morning, all the people who've died from swine flu (at least, in Mexico) were between 20 and 50, which lends credence to the 'it's a pandemic' idea.

jsyk, some Perth people are being test because of thier recent visit to Mexico and are alo showing symptoms.

Im worried, yes the media does blow stuff like this out of proportion, and my bodys immune system is that of a childs. I get sick all the freaking time, my body cant handle disease and stuff like that.
If i catch it im 100% sure i will most likely die.

People are just flipping out. The media's acting like it's the biggest thing under the sun, when that didn't happen with MRSA, which actually kills more people than AIDS.

.__. It might reach pandemic volume, but they have it under control. And the CDC says it's not even that bad.

it's only in mexico right now.
you've gotta think about where the money is and the priorities.
barack obama is more likely to spend money on a vaccine than the mexican president.
if only because the mexican president has no money to spend.

i know.
i was satirizing the fact that a hundred and fifty mexicans have died and none of them are getting treated with a vaccine.
and the fact that there apparently is a vaccine.
and the fact that the mexicans can't pay for it.

It's not a vaccine, there are two anti-virals that can be pretty effective.
But a) they're really expensive and b) they are VERY harsh on the body.

Also, let's remember - a couple thousand cases and less that two hundred deaths.
It isn't an automatic death.

With that said, it's scary yeah. Wash your hands, don't share food/water bottles - but it's airborne too, says my bio teacher.

Is it a confirmed case, Jenna?

I was reading the CDC website and it says there's only 60 medically confirmed cases so far.

...Although I was reading that on my phone so it may have just been a completely outdated page.

Wait. A disease transferrable from human to human resulting in deaths, isn't that the classification of a pandemic?
