I just heard on the news that if you're in school and have a cough and fever, you will be sent home for seven days.

Re: The H1N1 influenza
They've changed the name to H1N1, and it is no longer classified as the swine flu because of its innacurate name.
Re: The H1N1 influenza
So according to the facts, if it's contracted in a relatively stable part or western civilization, with good healthcare etc, you have about an 0.002% chance of dying.
I really don't see why people are so afraid.

Re: The H1N1 influenza
^ The media stretches the truth, and likes to scare people. People die from the flu everyday. This is just a mutated form, but apparently it has one less enzyme from the spanish flu from the early 1900's -which was a massive outbreak that killed hundreds of people across the world.
So, it could kill you, but so could the regular strain of influenza. You just need to be cautious.
I think you can approach this illness with caution and understanding while still being rationaly concerned, without going overboard.

Re: The H1N1 influenza
Yeah, it's said to be a mutated version of the spanish flu.
the difference between that and now though is about 100 years worth of medical advances.
I guess the issue is there's so little middle ground; the media says to be terrified, but I guess because we know how easily mass media is used as a tool of control, in an attempt to not let them manipulate us we could be desensitizing ourselves to something that is actually a threat. IDK, fine line I guess.
Although I look at it as this - I'm not afraid of the normal flu, and I've had two in my life that were life threatening, so I'm not about to be afraid of this.
Oh, and I changed the topic name, too. (y)

Re: The H1N1 influenza
Exactly, I completely agree with you. The flu has been around for a little less than a century, and our medical advances have helped us find a vaccine to prevent the regular strain of the flu.
This means that, in no time at all, we will probably be able to find a vaccine for this one.
The only thing that worries me, is that there are so many viruses now a days. Between SARS, H1N1 and things like mad cow, I'm starting to wonder if we did this to ourselves. There is no way that nature did this.
Haha, I saw. Thats ace. (y)

Re: The H1N1 influenza
Oh, I firmly believe we did it to ourselves. I mean, it's like those parents who are ridiculously overprotective of their children's health - studies show they grow up with immune systems almost twice as strong if they're exposed to basic threats, like animals, dirt, the common cold, etcetc.
I mean it's so basic - we drug ourselves up for the most basic, tiny things, and then wonder why we get sick at the drop of a hat.

Re: The H1N1 influenza
Yeah, now i think i might have overreacted a little with this.
Its just im not as healthy as a normal person is and im more receptive to diseases.
Im sick right now for gods sake! (But i dont have H1N1:))

Here's more info about how many cases of the H1N1 flu have emerged / how many people have died from it in each country.

Re: The H1N1 influenza
sorry to be dragging things up again but just find it funny that suddenly there's been a huge outbreak again in the UK [especially about a mile from where I live] after all this time in which we haven't seen or heard anything about it.
