Chapter i.

I looked up to my brother. His gaze was concentrated on a tinted window when suddenly the limo pulled to a stop. He looked over to me. “It’s the moment of truth. Ready, Mokuba?” I had been ready for this day since my brother first designed the idea of Kaiba Land. I knew that my brother would make his dream a reality someday, but he didn’t look happy like I imagined. Disappointed, I tried to get a good look at his stern face. Eyes narrowed and brows pushed forward. It was the same expression he always wore, but this time seemed different, like he was expecting something; or maybe someone.

My brother was a king. Not of any country; something even better. He was the president of Kaiba Corp and the “King of Games.”He never was beaten in a duel; but then I noticed something change within Seto a few days prior to the opening of Kaiba Land. Seto came home that night, completely mindless and aloof. He had a blank expression. He looked like he’d seen a ghost. I asked him what happened, and all he muttered was “I’ve seen death.” I immediately had him escorted to his chambers and worried about him the remainder of the night. Then I thought to myself, some one must have beaten him at a duel.

Even as Seto slid out of the limo, me following close at his heels, he never wore a smile. Outside, a crowd was waiting for us. They cheered Kaiba’s legendary name, and one could possibly smell just how much these children – and not even just children; high school students, even adults, cheered for my brother and me – wanted to have a shot at battling us in a game of duel monsters. These little cards were marvelous; although those monsters were just cards, the way a player would battle with their cards was similar to that of a musician. There was a special connection between a duelist and their cards, the way a musician is connected to their instrument, but I almost always doubted Seto cared for his cards the way real duelists did. His expression couldn’t fool me. Even the way he waved and greeted his guests, I knew something wasn’t right with the way he dueled. Honestly, my brother was vicious.

Seto took hold of a microphone as we came to the entrance of two very large – bigger than me, even Seto – glass doors. With this microphone, he led his followers, and they did follow, not knowing what my brother had planned; good or bad. No one could really say. “Thank you all for coming this evening. I would like to personally welcome you to the grand opening of Kaiba Land, a dream of mine since I was a boy. My brother and I wholeheartedly are grateful for the support you have given us since I became president of Kaiba Corp since my father passed away tragically six months ago.” As he spoke, Seto put an arm around me. “I believe that if he saw me today, and how I’ve led Kaiba Corp into the new generation of duelists everywhere, he would be proud.”

At that, the crowd cheered. Seto always knew what to say, but whether he was honest or lying was truly a question I’ve never dared to ask. Suddenly, a man with a dark black suit and hair stubs on his chin stepped from the crowd and stepped in front of Seto. Brother remained unmoved by the man’s actions, but he pushed me back as though to protect me. It wasn’t until then I started to panic. I gripped onto my brother’s leather jacket, the smell of it overpowering, but still ever so comforting.

The man pointed a vicious finger at Seto. “You shouldn’t be president! You drove the CEO to commit suicide! You’re no president of mine!” Security was a bit slow to the man’s actions; he moved quickly, possibly quicker than my brother when he dueled. Security had a bit of trouble with the man, nearly tearing his suit, pulling at his arms. He spat at Seto’s shoes, but he moved too fast. He stomped on the man’s spit, tilting his head. Finally, I saw a change in Seto’s face. I don’t think anyone else saw it; at least not the way I saw it. He looked… surprised. It was as if he just received an unpleasant Christmas gift.

There was a silence as the man was escorted away. It took three of our security guards to remove him from the property as he screamed such angry curses at Seto and me. Once I was sure he was gone, I let my brother go. Why would that man say such things? Seto was a fitting president, possibly the best that Kaiba Corp had ever seen.

“You have my deepest apologies for that man’s sudden outburst. Now, without further ado, I present to you all the grand opening of Kaiba Land!” Seto set the microphone down, and I had to take a double-glance at him. I swore I saw him smile. I figured it was just a memory.

Chapter ii.

It was everything we had imagined. Kaiba Corp, our very own indoor amusement park, was filled with gamers from all over the world; America, Germany, Australia, even England. It was incredible. Seto and I watched from our own private booth above the first floor (there were five floors in total), looking down as Seto had a glass of wine and I had soda.

I looked up to Seto smiling. “Can I taste your wine, brother?”

He looked at me, somewhat surprised. “You’re five years under the legal age. What kind of brother would I be to let you drink alcohol?”

I pouted. “Not even a sip? Fine…”

I looked away when he suddenly held his glass over to me. “Just one sip, Mokuba.”

“Huh?” I took the glass and tipped it to my lips. I could still taste it even as I gave the glass back to Seto and licked my lips.

“Tell you what…” Seto took a sip from the glass. “On your fourteenth birthday, we’ll have a huge dinner and I’ll let you have your first wine.”

Obviously thrilled by the idea, I laughed. “I’ll be keeping you to that promise.”

Just as Seto opened his mouth to say something, someone opened the door to the VIP booth. Simultaneously, Seto and I turned in our seats. A man at the door bowed in respect. “Master Seto, Master Mokuba, some guests have arrived with your special invitations.”

I wanted to say, ‘we never sent anything of the sort,’ but Seto stood from his seat, leaving his wine on the table between us. “Excellent, where are they now?”

“Right this way.” The employee and Seto left the room. I stayed behind, deciding I’d catch up with them later. I took Seto’s glass of wine and downed the last of it. He would never know. After that, I left the VIP booth and found Seto with three other boys and a girl. I haven’t seen Seto with friends before. He turned and beckoned me to come over.

“Mokuba, meet some students from Domino High School.” It was when Seto said this that I knew he had been friends with them for a long time. He hadn’t been in school for a month due to last minute difficulties building Kaiba Land. “This is Anzu. She will actually be working here at Kaiba Land as a part-time job.” He gestured toward the girl, and we exchanged smiles. “This is Jonouchi and Honda.” The two boys looked rather intimidating, hovering over me. They were about the same height as Seto. “And this is my latest dueling opponent, Yugi.”

“So you’re Kaiba’s little brother?” The boy’s voice took me by surprise. I didn’t need to look up or down; he was exactly my height. It was hard to believe he was a high school student.

“This is Mokuba, the heir to Kaiba Corp.” Seto put his arm around me, and I smiled. My brother never introduced me as an heir the way he did to these students. “Yugi, shall we start our rematch?”

The word rematch took me by surprise, and I looked up to my brother suspiciously.

Yugi nodded. “I’m ready.”

“Excellent. I’ll have an escort take you to the dome on the fifth floor. See you all soon.” The strangers took their leave, leaving Seto and I alone.

“What did he mean by rematch?” I asked him before he had a chance to leave for the dome arena at the top of Kaiba Land.

“Yugi is an exceptional duelist.” He turned and faced me. “He was the first to beat me in a duel. But now, he doesn’t stand a chance.” I looked at him with a questionable expression. “No one can beat these.” From a small pack around his belt, he pulled three duel monster cards. My eyes widened. “That’s right, Mokuba; the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. I now have three of them. One is impossible to beat. Imagine how hard it will be for him to come up with some solution to beating these cards.”

“You’re going to summon all three at once?!”

“Oh yes. One isn’t enough to teach him who the true King of Games is. I’ll summon the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon! He’ll be blown away. I can imagine the look on his face now.” Seto ruffled my hair, pulling at the black strands gently. Then, while walking away, he looked at his three cards that assured his win before giving a vicious, foreshadowing smirk.

That wasn’t the Seto I had grown up with.

Chapter iii.

“You might as well give up now, Yugi.”

The crowd was quiet. If they cheered too loud for Seto’s win, they wouldn’t be able to hear what was happening in the duel arena below. Seto sat at one end of the table. Yugi sat across from him. I narrowed my eyes in the VIP booth, studying Yugi carefully. He looked completely different. He wore an expression similar to Seto’s; one of hate, revenge, and complete determination. His hair surely looked different, and when he spoke, it was like he was a completely different person as his voice deepened. He sounded and more looked like a man than just a child.

Yugi sat with his arms crossed. “Here is the rematch I promised you. But don’t you get to confident, Seto Kaiba.”

Kaiba only chuckled. “Confident? My victory is promised. I will humiliate you the way you humiliated me many days ago.”

This time, Yugi exchanged a laugh. It was almost more sadistic than my brother’s. “Are we going to play, or will you continue to boast your so-called promised victory?”

“Hold on now, keep your shirt on. This game will be a bit different from regular duel monsters.” As Seto spoke, I could see Yugi’s expression change from one of determination to that of an interested duelist. “As you may have noticed, we’re in a plastic box. This is a special box. I have designed a way for our monsters to practically come to life by just a flip of your card. The secret is holograms, instantly transforming a picture on your card into a real monster that would even scare you. Does this sound familiar?”

“So, you’ve copied a shadow game into something more real. Your penalty game will certainly be ‘out of this world.’” Yugi leaned back, a bit more relaxed.

“Shut up and duel. 40 cards in our decks and each player will begin with 2000 life points. Draw your cards, and prepare yourself for your penalty game.”

This was a side of Seto I was unfamiliar with. Normally, when he dueled, he was more aloof and could beat his opponent without drawing more than ten cards. What was so frightening about this Yugi kid, anyway?

Then I remembered the night Seto came home. The way he spoke in my memories still petrified me, not nearly as much as what Yugi and brother meant about “shadow games” and “penalty games.” When Yugi and Seto began to build their hands, the door to the VIP booth opened. I wanted to yell and say this was for Kaiba Corp personnel only, but it was an escort along with all of the students I had just met. I was surprised to see them enter quietly and take their seats. Anzu sat at the end next to me. On the side opposite to Anzu were Jonouchi and Honda who immediately took my spot on the armrest, forcing me off with his muscles. They began whispering to each other and looking at me.

“Don’t pay attention to them.” Anzu whispered to me softly, sure that the two men wouldn’t hear. “They’re a couple of blockheads that don’t know how to pick a fight.” She winked and smiled.

Honda looked at me suspiciously. “So you’re Kaiba’s little brother Mokuba, huh. You’re a little short for a thirteen-year-old.”

I growled. “And you look a little old to be in high school.”

Honda stood from his seat, hovering over me. I didn’t even flinch. “You little brat!”

“Whoa there, Honda, relax! He’s just a kid!” Jonouchi stood next to him and held Honda from hitting me.

Imitating my brother, I crossed my arms and leaned back smirking. “I knew you wouldn’t hit me. My brother would sue your ass.”

Jonouchi and Honda exchanged a few hateful words and eventually cooled off. Anzu seemed a bit tense in her chair. “P-please forgive them; they don’t know how to act as guests. Concentrate on the duel, boys.”

Yugi and Seto had been getting into their duel. Jonouchi seemed to be more interested in this game more than the others, and he pretty much was the play-by-play for this duel. “Whoa, look at that; Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress! Not bad, it has 1400 attack points and 1200 defense points. Yugi has a good chance to a decent start to this duel.” And sure enough, Yugi did have a nice start. The Winged Dragon took down two of Kaiba’s cards. It was then I realized that what Seto said was true; Yugi was certainly a great duelist.

I sat through the beginning of the duel fidgeting and worrying. Then my expression suddenly changed as I watched Yugi draw his next card. He looked… befuddled. It was like he didn’t care about this duel anymore; it was all concentrated on that single card he drew. He put more monsters out on the field. Things were looking very grim for Yugi, and Seto looked like he was about to go insane with the confidence he had in this duel. Suddenly, he burst out into hysterical laughter. Yugi looked more confused than before.

“You don’t understand! You’ve already lost! Look what I have…” Seto put down a card on the field. The holographic illusion blew everyone away. “That’s right: Blue-Eyes White Dragon! And he isn’t alone…” I thought to myself, he couldn’t possibly be summoning all three at once. The fear in Yugi’s eyes was unbearable. Jonouchi, the one who I thought would be hysteric by now, grew silent. I was positive he knew there was no hope now. “Here we have… a second Blue-Eyes White dragon!”

It was like someone had just rolled over dead. The audience was in shock, but Anzu and the others were completely paralyzed. “What the hell is going on?!” Honda stood from his seat. If I underestimated his intelligence, I would have thought that he was going to jump through the glass box we sat in. It was a good thing Yugi and Seto couldn’t hear him; he said some pretty nasty words that Seto warned me never ever to use until I become the right age.

“So Yugi, what are you going to do next? We’re all just dying to see.” Seto, clearly comfortable with his turn, leaned back. He studied Yugi intently. Yugi only shook his head. “You have 200 life points. I have 1000. Will you give up, or continue your torture and move onto your penalty game?”

He drew another card, and again that strange look came back. But suddenly, Yugi was smiling. He almost looked triumphant to the uneducated that didn’t know what life points were. He lied a card down, and everyone was stunned; including me. “200 life points will remain. I lay down the magic card, Swords of Revealing Light!”

I was in shock. So he did have a bit of a trick up his sleeve, but I had faith in my brother. Swords of Revealing Light, a magic card, enabled the opponent’s monsters on the field to attack, leaving them stunned for three turns, and it was only three turns Yugi had to save himself. From the VIP booth, it looked pretty impossible for him to win. And then Seto laughed again. “That won’t stop me.” He took a card from his current hand and put it on the field. “My third Blue-Eyes White Dragon.”

It was impossible. There were only four copies of that card, and Seto had three. He spent millions on those three cards. People would do anything for just one; a man once sold his house and furniture just for that card. Seto must have bought it from him and now he’s probably living somewhere glamorous, like Hollywood or New York. Brother had interesting stories about that magnificent card, and this would be a story passed down to our children and theirs.

Yugi drew his next card. This time his expression was blank. “I summon Exodia, the Forbidden One.”

It was worse than before. Only there was cheering. I turned to Jonouchi, who seemed to be a bit more educated in the game. “What’s Exodia?”

He gave me a funny look and laughed in my face. “It’s more powerful than Kaiba’s little dragons, that’s for sure. No one in dueling history has been able to summon him. There are five cards in order to summon him: his legs, arms, and head. Take a look over there.” Jonouchi pointed to the hologram of Exodia. It was breathtaking; the beast resembled an Egyptian god. He emerged from a star formed on the table. Chains held his arms down, holding his torso still in the star, but if one looked under the table, there were no legs to be found. “Looks like your brother is gonna be denounced as the King, eh?” Exodia gave a menacing roar as its full body became visible. I could almost feel the White Dragons trembling.

“Well, I guess I’ll just end this for the both of us. His attack is infinite. Do your dragons want to give it a shot?” Yugi leaned back as Exodia again roared, shaking the building.

My poor brother looked dead. He clearly couldn’t believe what he saw. He was done for, and the uselessness he must have been feeling… it made me tremble.

“I suppose not. Well, finish him off, Exodia, with your Rage Inferno!”

The summoning of Exodia was not nearly as unimaginable as his abilities. Exodia let out a beam of fire, burning the White Dragons almost instantly. Their screeching cries stung my ears, but the screaming and cheering of the audience soon overpowered that sound. I was amazed. Yugi made such a comeback… it was legendary! The excitement went from anguish to terror and finished with destruction. Seto was in shock.

“Are you ready for your penalty game, Seto Kaiba?!” Brother didn’t answer to Yugi’s enraged voice. He was clutching his stomach, as if he was sick. This wasn’t right; my brother took this game too seriously. How bad could a penalty game possibly be? My heart ached for my brother as I could tell how much he wanted to scream, how much pain and anguish he felt. I stood from my seat, swallowing and my hands shaking. “Penalty game: Mind crush!” The holograms disappeared, and Seto’s eyes rolled back and closed as he fainted.

My eyes widened. “W-what… what the hell did he do to my brother?!”

Anzu stood next to me, trying to comfort me. “Yugi has… a ‘power’ over people when he’s dueling, but believe me when I say your brother will be fine.”

I could feel my eyes sting with tears. Seeing my brother on the ground, lifeless, and medics rushing to him was petrifying. It was like watching a nightmare; completely useless and just watching from the sidelines.

The same escort from before came into the VIP booth urgently. “This way, master Mokuba.”

I rushed from the booth, but as soon as I left, something held me back. I turned and faced Anzu; she looked worried too. “It’s okay, Mokuba. He isn’t dead, he’s just… sleeping.”

“…I don’t know what to think anymore.” I snatched my arm from her. “Tell Yugi that we won’t let this go unpunished.”

Anzu was shocked at me. “Y-you’re going to sue Yugi?!”

I growled, glaring at her. “No. I’m going to avenge my brother for what Yugi has done.” With that, I turned on my heel and ran to the elevator, just in time to meet Seto’s stretcher and ambulance on the first floor.

Chapter iv.

I didn’t know what to do. I sat in my brother’s hospital room, brushing my fingers through his hair in hopes that he’d surprise me and wake up. They only allowed two of us in the room at a time. I refused to leave my brother’s side. Seto meant everything to me, and I couldn’t imagine leaving him alone with someone else.

Yugi was the only one who came with us. I knew this wasn’t the Yugi I first met. This was the Yugi that punished my brother for his sins by crushing his heart. Yugi sat with a blank expression, watching me. I was doing the same. He crossed his legs, and I repeated the motion. He chuckled, and I only smiled.

“He’ll wake up soon.” Yugi gestured toward my brother’s bed. “He needs to put the puzzle back together.”

I looked at him perplexed. “What puzzle?” I asked.

“He must complete the puzzle to his heart in order to wake up.”

I looked down. I didn’t understand; Yugi was talking in riddles. I looked back to him, and then I tilted my head. He changed again. I couldn’t help but think that there was more than one Yugi inside of Yugi. The other Yugi must have been the darker side of Yugi’s heart.

I looked him up and down. This definitely was a different Yugi; he didn’t have yellow spikes in his hair going up like the black ones and his expression seemed less bitter and more kind. I noticed something hanging around his neck; a pyramid with an eye in the center. It looked like real gold; it was probably worth thousands. “What’s that pendant around your neck?” I asked.

He smiled; it was the first time I saw him smile since the duel. “It’s the millennium puzzle. It took me eight years to put together. Lucky for me, everyone that tried to put it together before me died mysterious deaths.” He took the pendant in his hands. “It was found in an Egyptian pharaoh’s tomb 3,000 years ago. Pretty cool, isn’t it?”

I nodded. “Yeah… cool.” As I spoke, I heard Seto groan in his sleep. I looked at him concerned. “I still don’t understand what you’ve done to my brother.” I looked back to Yugi, glaring. “I will be getting my revenge. Why don’t we play a game, just you and me?”

Yugi suddenly looked interested. “What kind of game?”

“We’ll be playing a game different from duel monsters. You’ll just have to wait and see what it is, tomorrow at my mansion.” I leaned back in my chair. “I’ll even send a limo to pick you up. Bring a friend, too.”

I smirked as Yugi stirred in his seat.

X

The next morning, Seto was sent home. He was still in a coma, but he was beginning to respond to his surroundings. The funny thing was that he would only respond to me. I would mention Yugi, and his fingers twitched. I mentioned home and the fun we had as kids, and he would crack a bit of a smile. He was resting in his room, and would be for the remainder of the day while I carried out my own game with Yugi.

I knew he was scared. As I walked down the stairs to greet him at the front door of the mansion, I put on a façade. I smiled warmly to him and Jonouchi, the friend he chose to bring. “Welcome!”

Yugi nervously smiled as Jonouchi looked around the front hall, gawking at the stone statues of angels and paintings of my brother, me, and my father. Yugi nudged Jonouchi to remind him they were guests. “Thanks for uh… inviting us, Mokuba.”

“It was my pleasure; after all, you beat my brother in a duel. He’s been dueling for years, and no one has beaten him before. Before our game, I think we should have a bit of lunch.” I smiled and looked at Jonouchi, who seemed thrilled by the idea.

“Aw, sweet, we get to have gourmet food in a mansion! Yugi should beat Kaiba at duels more often!” Jonouchi was grinning widely, pulling his friend into a headlock.

Yugi struggled to get away from Jonouchi, but finally broke free and laughed. “Calm down, Joey. We’re guests. Lead the way, Mokuba.”

I nodded and smirked as I turned my back to them and led them into a secluded room on the opposite side of the mansion. The servants had just finished preparing a lovely array of food on the center of a circular table. What Yugi didn’t see coming was that this was our game. I’d show Yugi not to mess with authorities like Kaiba Corp and the real King of Games. That title was rightfully my brother’s.

“Here we are; I had a lunch prepared just for us.” I sat down at the table. Yugi and Joey, who was grimacing at the food before him, sat across from me. “Is something wrong?” I asked.

“Oh, nothing, I was just expecting an expensive gourmet meal. It’s all just kiddy food.” He shrugged.

Yugi smiled at his friend. “But there’s a burger, and you know that’s my favorite. I know what I’m having!”

“The table can turn, so pick whatever you want.” I gave the table a light spin until the burger was in front of Yugi. He took a bite and cleared his plate pretty quickly; I was sure to put small portions on the plates. Jonouchi had macaroni and cheese; but as he chewed, his expression went blank, and he gagged. I smirked as he fell over in his chair, eyes closed.

“Jonouchi?!” Yugi cried out. “Mokuba, what’s wrong with him?!”

I shrugged. “He’s been poisoned, but don’t worry, I have the antidote.” I held a little glass vial between my tiny fingers and tapped the cap twice. “Welcome to our game: Lunch Roulette. The point of the game is to not get the food with the poison in it. Just give the table a spin, clear the plate in front of you, and pray you won’t die in thirty minutes after eating the poison.” I looked to the syrup bottle I had on my side of the table; I had a bit of a secret, and was pretty confident Yugi wouldn’t find out. There was nothing suspicious about the bottle, seeing as there were pancakes on the table.

Sure enough, when I looked back up, Yugi changed. I was face to face with a determined, angry “other Yugi,” whom I was sure wasn’t too happy about the danger he and Jonouchi were in. The game was simple: the loser gets poisoned, and can only hope they get the antidote in time. “Well, then we better get started before Joey’s thirty minutes are up…” Yugi nervously gave the tabletop a spin. I gripped the syrup bottle gently, pressing the top with my index finger. A small bowl of mashed potatoes stopped in front of him. Damn, I was late to react. Lucky for me, an ice cream sundae stopped in front of me. These two dishes weren’t poisoned.

“Well, don’t be afraid; dig in!”

Yugi took his time eating the first spoon of mashed potatoes. Then, when he was sure there wasn’t any poison, he quickly downed the last of it. We finished clearing the plates at the same time. “Well done, you’ve managed to avoid the poison. Looks like it’s my turn to spin.”

“Hold on. What’s in that bottle you’re holding?” Yugi gestured toward the syrup bottle beneath my fingers.

“It’s just syrup; there are pancakes on the table after all.” I said, making sure he wasn’t too suspicious about it. I looked down at the bottle, smiling, and then gave the table a powerful spin. Suddenly, after a second of spinning, the bottle smashed into pieces. It was a startle for me; how the hell did that bottle break?! Then, as the table stopped, I glared at Yugi. He tied that damned pendant to the table, and when I spun the table, the puzzle broke the bottle. He outsmarted me! He actually did it! And then, as I looked down at the plate in front of me, my eyes widened. He broke the table switch, and the plate of spaghetti landed in front of me; the plate with poison. I swore to myself, frozen in place.

“What’s wrong, Mokuba? I thought the rules were to complete the plate in front of you.” He wiped his lips with a napkin. “It looks like I don’t have the plate with poison, and yours is the last one on the table.”

My hands balled into fists. I glared, taking a fork and twirling the noodles. It only took one bite of the poison to knock me out of my chair. I came crashing to the floor, my eyes closing instantly. The last thing I saw was Yugi taking the antidote from my hands.

Chapter v.

Even though my eyes were open, it was dark. I had to blink four times to make sure my eyes weren’t still closed. I tried to look around. All I could hear was my breathing. Then suddenly, I heard something else. It was similar to the sound of a drum or a heartbeat. I looked down; there were puzzle pieces scattered at my feet. They were all different colors, but didn’t look like they could possibly go together. I fell to my knees, clutching the different pieces in my hands and was on the verge of tears. Was I going to be trapped there forever? Would I even be able to solve that puzzle?

I looked up, and this time, I was definitely crying. I tried to call for help, but no one appeared. I felt a tap on my shoulder after giving a defeated cry, holding my hands to my face and screaming, completely scared of who could be behind me.

“Don’t be afraid.” He said. I turned to face him; he looked just like Yugi, but I knew it wasn’t him. This had to be the “other” Yugi. He wore a cape and golden jewelry, almost like a king. “Put the pieces of your heart back together, Mokuba.”

I looked down at the broken puzzle, reaching for the pieces. I held a dark blue piece. As I ran my fingers over this piece, memories came flooding back to me. Memories of my childhood and every emotion I felt. It held every memory in the orphanage my brother and I lived in for years, and the day that we were adopted by a man everyone addressed as “Mr. Kaiba.” I cherished those memories.

I picked up another piece, holding the dark blue in one hand and a red piece in the other. That piece triggered memories of my brother. He had taught me so much; how to protect myself, how to play chess, and even stand up for what I believed. I put this piece with the blue piece. To my luck, the two connected. I smiled and looked behind me to thank the mysterious man, but he was gone. My hand rose to my chest as I felt a beating there in an easy rhythm, and I realized I had no clothes on. I was completely naked, cold, and alone.

I looked down again, picking up a piece of the puzzle to my heart. The next one made me whimper in pain; it was a grey piece. I suddenly felt an overwhelming sensation of fear, anxiety, and hopelessness. I gripped the piece, trying to decide what to do with it. Then, with all the strength I had, I threw it far away. It made a slight ding as it hit the ground. It was too far to see where it went.

I was trapped in darkness. I couldn’t move, and the only way to escape was to finish a puzzle to my heart. I put more pieces together and the shape became clear; a heart made of different colors that blended together harmoniously. Colors clashed, and at the completed result, I smiled. I felt like I had been there for hours, picking up pieces and attaching them to my heart. I completed the puzzle, so why didn’t I wake up? I curled up into a ball on the floor, hugging the puzzle close to my chest.

I couldn’t see; I only breathed and counted how many breaths I took in a minute; eleven deep breaths in one minute and thirty seconds. I let out a sigh of frustration and checked my pulse to count the minutes. I was having a bit of trouble; I checked my neck and my wrists, but I never got a pulse. Was I dead? I thought that I was stuck in limbo, in between heaven and Hell. The greater beings didn’t know where to put me. I accepted that; I did try to kill someone, and probably succeeded. Still, it was nothing compared to the pain that Yugi caused. He’d go to Hell for everything he did.

It was getting harder to breathe. It felt like the walls of darkness were closing in on my lungs. My breathing became more labored. In the midst of the panic attack, I couldn’t hold onto my puzzle anymore; I dropped it, and luckily it didn’t fall to pieces. I couldn’t tell if my eyes were still open, but my breathing suddenly came to a stop, and my lungs filled with air again.

My eyes shot open, like I had just woken from a bad dream. I was immediately angry at the fact I was still in darkness, but my surroundings became clear. I was in a bedroom, one very familiar.

I looked around. Was I finally home? Then I noticed my clothes in a pile at the end of my bed. The bed was far too big for me; my feet didn’t even touch the end. I pushed the covers off with my legs and crawled over to the pile of clothes, neatly folded and my treasured locket on top. My lips twitched into a shy smile. Everything was coming back; my memories, my ability to move, and my hope. Seto must have put my clothes at the end of the bed, meaning he was awake, too!

I didn’t let my excitement get the better of me as I put on a clean, warm change of clothes and pulled the locket over my head. This was my treasure. Inside it was a picture of my brother. The picture stood out from the rest; he was smiling. It was genuine. It wasn’t a smirk or a crack of a smile. It was a full, alarming, hopeful smile. It was one that you couldn’t help but smile back.

Fully clothed and feeling more alive than before, I started my journey to hunt the mansion for my brother. My first step outside my room made a creaking sound, and I smiled. I never thought I would miss home like I did. It felt like eternity, being trapped and alone in darkness. It was like a religious experience just walking down the halls toward my brother’s room. Even as I approached his door, I smiled before shyly turning the knob and opening the door.

My heart was shattered in a mere blink of an eye as I saw that my brother wasn’t awake. He rested on his bed, still in a coma. To think, I had trusted what Yugi and Anzu said. I woke up, but what would happen to my brother? The situation completely puzzled me. There was no reason for my brother to still be in a coma. It wasn’t possible that I could have woken up before him; he always came before me.

I got on my knees next to my brother’s bed. He looked peaceful, but that was what worried me; he showed no signs of waking up. I put my hand on his arm. “Seto, are you sleeping?” I asked. I found it fitting that his name was my first word since I woke up. “I’m awake…”

There wasn’t a response. He wouldn’t even respond to my voice like he used to. I thought that perhaps since he hadn’t heard it for so long that he probably didn’t recognize it. I took his hand and intertwined our fingers. “It’s your little brother; Mokuba.” As I spoke, there was no physical response. Then I mentioned my name. I felt his fingers tighten around my hand, instantly perking me up. He remembered me. That was all I needed to move on and look around the rest of the mansion. I promised my brother I would come back for him and be there the second he woke up.

I closed the door gently behind me as I left. Even with a heavy heart, I knew that I had to stay strong for my brother’s sake. This meant taking care of Kaiba Corp while he rested to put his puzzle together. I owed it to Seto to take care of what he cherished most. He took care of me. At the orphanage, I was bullied because I was weak. Seto was always there, though. He stood between me and the bigger boys.

“Don’t you dare touch my little brother!” Seto yelled at them. Then, he would challenge them to chess, and they wouldn’t talk to me for weeks. After that, they apologized. No one dared to say anything bad about Seto and me.

As I roamed the halls of the mansion, looking at the countless paintings of the man I called father and his father, I was in a trance. I didn’t notice the maid at the end of the hall until she gasped in surprise, looking me up and down. “M-master Mokuba, you’re awake!” She said. I smiled.

“Yeah, I’m here.” I turned to face her. “All of me.”

The maid was near hysteria, but she calmed herself. “You were in a coma for two months…” She breathed.

It did shock me. It was like I stopped breathing for a second. “What happened to KC while I was asleep?” I asked.

She looked around, as if to make sure no one was watching. Then, she came closer and leaned down to my ear. “The stocks have dropped dramatically. The Top 5 have even considered handing Kaiba Corp to a man in Industrial Illusions. He is the man that created duel monsters; Maximillion Pegasus.”

I tilted my head. Why would the Top 5 even consider putting Kaiba Corp in some stranger’s hands? This was our company; Seto and I had practically grown up here. We adopted the name Kaiba and inherited the power and burden of the fate of the company. “I need to stop them! Is there anything I can do?” I pleaded.

The maid nodded. “They can’t control Kaiba Corp unless they have some very important documents. I don’t know what the documents are, but I know they are in a safe. They can’t get in the safe without a certain key. I don’t know which key or where the safe is.” She seemed a bit disappointed in herself for lacking information. “The key is in master Seto’s office. I’m afraid that’s all I know.”

I gave her an encouraging smile. “Thank you. I don’t know why you know as much as you do, but you will be rewarded if I can save Kaiba Corp.”

“Thank you, master Mokuba. If you need anything, I will be happy to serve you.” She bowed politely.

“That won’t be necessary.” I dismissed her and took my leave toward Seto’s office. Things were looking a bit brighter.

When I arrived at Seto’s office, the door was closed. I knocked, hoping that no one was in there. After waiting for an answer, I turned the knob and pushed the door open. The office was dark. The only source of light was behind the curtains. If I were a stranger, I would have guessed this office was abandoned. It hadn’t been touched since Seto finished his preparations for Kaiba Land. I walked over to his desk, and scattered along it were blueprints for this dream that was becoming a reality. His dream was to create a chain of Kaiba Lands. This amusement park was concentrated on kids less fortunate. Seto felt that sympathy toward them because we were once in that position. He dedicated years to creating this escape for young gamers all over the world. On top of the blueprints was one in particular; this was a blueprint for a Kaiba Land soon to be built in America.

It was getting hard to see in the office. I walked to the curtains and pulled them apart, illuminating the room with fresh sunlight and in return, my eyes stung at the harsh rays. It had been two months since I had seen sunlight. I turned back to the desk and opened some of the drawers. The top two drawers were filled to the top with papers and files. However, the bottom drawer was locked. “That’s a magnificent strategy, brother.” I muttered under my breath.

Seto had put the key in this drawer; I was positive. First, I had to find the key to the drawer before continuing my search for the safe. Again, I looked around my brother’s desk. My eyes traveled over blueprints, paperwork, his duel monsters deck, and some pens. There was one thing that stood out; next to his deck was a locket that resembled mine. It was the same shape; a duel monster card. I took it in my hands. I wanted to look inside and I betted that I would find a picture of Seto’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon.

However, to my surprise, when I opened the locket, I found a picture of myself. I looked a lot younger, and I was smiling. It looked just like my picture of Seto. I took my locket and held it next to his. Side by side, they looked as though they were from the same picture. I never felt such a connection to Seto like I did there. But to my dismay, the picture looked as though it was falling out. I held it up and surprisingly, something fell from behind the picture and hit the floor.

The key! A silver key fell to my feet. The sun made it glisten as I held it up, triumphant in my small adventure for the day. I put the key through the keyhole of the drawer and pulled it open. In the drawer was an envelope. After tearing it open, a small gold key fell into my hands. As the key was put into my hands, I knew that the future of Kaiba Corp relied on me.

Suddenly, I heard a knock at the door and I immediately put the key in my pocket in a quick motion. “Master Mokuba,” A voice called. The voice was shaky, as though the owner was frightened. I looked to the door. “S-some men are here to see you. They’re in the foyer.”

Confused, I headed toward the foyer and I actually felt the harsh sting of fear pierce my chest. Five men stood before me; each one was distinguished in their own way, be it size or hair. I blinked, taking a step back.

“Hello master Mokuba. We are the Top 5.” The man in the center addressed me. I stood tall, remembering that I had a duty to fill out. “We have come to get the documents for a man named Pegasus. He will be taking over Kaiba Corp. We know you have the key to the safe, so hand it over before your precious company falls apart before your eyes.”

There was nothing I could do. I wish I could perform magic and make the Top 5 disappear, but I was just a boy. I went into my pocket and fetched the key. Perhaps I did know a trick or too. After all, magic was only an illusion. The man smiled as I held the key between my fingers. Then, I smirked and put the key in my mouth. “What are you doing?!” The man yelled.

I swallowed the key and patted my belly, as if to say I just had a rather excellent meal. “You’ll have to cut me open if you want this key. But the funny thing is I will never let you have it.”

The man didn’t like that. He snapped his fingers and two men quickly came up behind me, pulling me by my vest, and dragging me off my feet before punching me in the stomach hard enough to get the wind knocked out of me. I was too drowsy on the plane ride to realize I was being kidnapped. I couldn’t even say goodbye to Seto.
